Africa is considered by most paleoanthropologists to be the oldest inhabited territory on earth, with the human species originating from the continent. Afri was the name of several peoples who dwelt in North Africa near the provincial capital, Carthage. The Roman suffix “-ca” denotes “country or land”. Africa’s largest country is Sudan, and its smallest country is the Seychelles, an archipelago off the east coast. The smallest nation on the continental mainland is The Gambia.
