I came across an interesting article at AListApart. Aza Raskin (the author) talks about how to improve user interface design for different applications.
Have you ever lost your work, because you to quickly pressed ok button in save changes dialog? I did … a lot! If this happened to you to and if you’re a designer as well, then you better read this article, because here you’ll find the solution for this problem.
Aza writes about Google’s user friendly interface and it’s valuable function to undo the deleted item. Warnings are time consuming and you’ll surely have as he call it “oops!” moment. That’s a moment when you press ok in the warning dialog and realize that you just lost all your data.
Part of solution is to just remove warning massage. The work is faster and you can’t get really confused if there’s no warning. But we don’t want to lose our data just like that, that’s when the undo function comes in handy. Rather than bothering the users with warning dialogs Google lets you undo your action. This way you’re not bothered with redundant actions and you have a choice to correct your errors.
Sadly Google doesn’t use this function in all of it’s applications, it seems it only uses it in Gmail, so be careful.
The article really made me think and surely I will do my best to implement this kind of logic into my web applications.
