I’ve recently started to blog. Novak’s Blog has about month and a half under his belt today and I already made a lot of mistakes. Well they were not really mistakes, but they considerably lowered my CTR and pageviews. I will cover few most common mistakes almost every blogger made on his blog.

Don’t put too many ads on your blog

If you put 5 ads on one page (3 ads, 1 link unit, 1 referral) your ad boxes will be half empty. Instead of showing 4 ads in large rectangle container the AdSense will show only 2 or maybe even 1 ad and only if you selected “Fill space with solid color” option in AdSense setup. Otherwise AdSense will display Public Service Ads (PDAs) which you don’t want because they don’t pay you anything for clicks.

Don’t use too many highlighted keywords

I tried to mark the most important words in my articles bold so the AdSense could serve better ads for my website but what I’ve got was totally opposite effect. What I’ve got were low paying ads so I quickly unmarked those words and let AdSense to determine which words are more important.

Make your grammar correct and use spell checker

You have to make your post grammatical correct. Which is very hard in my case, because english is not my native language. I try to use Wordpress’s spell checker to write properly but I know it’s hard if you don’t know how to form sentences. My only advice for you is to write, write and then write some more and eventually you’ll get it.

Don’t copy someone else’s content

You shouldn’t copy other content, not only because it’s not legal but because of your moral obligation. If you must write about something that has already been told, rewrite the article and put in your opinions or use quotes of selected article but remember that you can use only few lines of text in your quotes.

Don’t tell you friends about your blog.

For gods sake don’t tell all your friends and family about your blog and AdSense and how it works. This can only mean trouble. Google has advanced click finder and will know if your friends are extensively clicking on your ads.

Conclusion

Just try to find your niche and stick to it. If you’ll write passionately about it people will realize it and come to your blog.
