British rock band Radiohead just announced their new album In Rainbows. They are offering the entire album through their website. What’s the price you ask? Well, it’s up to you.
Radiohead is a very popular band not only in Britain but through the whole world. They have very large fan base and that’s the reason why this unusual method might just work.
Because they have no record label, they’re able to offer their songs in mp3 format. When you put the record into the shopping cart, you can determine the price. That way nobody will overpay the album.
Offering something for free is very effective business model. They’re currently making buzz through the whole internet community and there’s no doubt in my mind that they’ll make pretty nice profit.

I think this is a great idea for marketing and publicity, however i’m not entirely sold on the idea from a money making standpoint. We all know everyone likes free stuff. Thats a given. I’m sure there are a bunch of people out there, myself included who wouldn’t mind paying a dollar a song for a good Radiohead album, but on the whole I’m not sure they will make much money from this - however they will generate a ton of PR and buzz, so in the end maybe thats what they want?
